About Paul Howard Burns

Paul Burns began the study of piano at the age of seven. Three years later he made his first public appearance and so sparked the beginning of a long career as an active soloist and chamber musician. After working with Julius Chajes and Norman Gifford, he went on to do eight years of advanced study with Boris Maximovich, former Professor at the Kiev Conservatory, with whom he took his degree, as well as Master's work at Wayne State University.  Maximovich was a student of the legendary pianist, Simon Barere. From this great Russian tradition, Paul was very fortunate to have acquired a more natural, economical and relaxed school of playing the piano known as “arm-weight piano technique.”  Mr. Burns has shared this technique through teaching and coaching for more than thirty years.

Paul has also performed extensively as soloist and chamber musician at such major venues as the Meadowbrook Music Festival; The Detroit Institute of Arts' Kolego Concert Series and “Brunch With Bach”; Orchestra Hall; Somerset Mall Sunday Concert Series; the Birmingham Unitarian Church “Nightcap with Mozart”; the Wayne State University Symphony Orchestra; and in St. Kitts and Jamaica in the Caribbean region.

He has also appeared frequently as a classical music entertainer at notable Detroit metro area restaurants and hotels such as The Whitney, The Ritz-Carlton, The Townsend, and many others. To listen to excerpts of Mr. Burns playing, click here.
